Children are very special in God’s sight. That seems the direction the ministry of HHU has gone as our programs develop. We already know the Student Sponsorship program allows poor children to receive an excellent education in Christian schools, making a difference in their and their families lives. God has also led us to involvement with another special ministry. The Bethesda Home for Girls (Bethesda Hogar de Niñas) in Santo Domingo is a place for unwanted girls. There, they have the safety and protection of a “family” of staff and other girls, who really do care for their needs. They have a warm, dry place to stay, clothing, food and the necessities growing girls need.
Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they
are old they will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6
They live in a small house in the extreme northwest part of the city. There are 40 girls there, ages 1½ to 19 years of age. The girls have their own chores to do in the home. The staff there supervises these girls and are surrogate mothers to them. A local Christian school allows them to attend classes there for free and the girls attend a local church every Sunday, then they spend time getting ready for the next school week.
The needs are great. There is another organization helping with part of the needs of the Home. They recognize the needs are greater than their resources and they have encouraged us to find ways to help fill in those gaps.
Right now, besides providing monthly funds to purchase food, we take school supplies to them. We have taken homemade clothing and blankets. For the past several years we have funded a traditional family Christmas meal for the girls. We purchased school uniforms for the girls (required for them to attend school). We have set up a monthly giving opportunity to buy food for the girls. In spite of all of this, there are still more needs that need to be met.
Here are some ways you can help
Please look over these opportunities to help these young women and help them reach their potential. Also, please pray for the girls and the staff at the Bethesda Home for Girls.
So, is it possible to adopt a child from the Dominican Republic? Yes, it is, but it will take effort, time, and lots of money. However, if you still would like to find out more, please give us a call and we will direct you to agencies that can help you.
