Here is an invitation for you to share your knowledge as a teacher by helping present seminars in our 2018 teacher trips in the Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic teachers have big hearts and a strong desire to teach children. But they have very few educational opportunities to improve their teaching skills. These trips are designed to allow teacher’s from the US to share with Dominican teachers their experiences and techniques that work in their classrooms. Plans are for these teams to present two sets of two day-long seminars for teachers during each trip. The subjects, material, and sessions will be developed by trip participants. The number of Dominican teachers allowed to participate will be based on the number of trainers we have. We would like to train up to 100 teachers at each seminar site. Besides teachers, we could also use Spanish speakers to help translate these seminars. Subjects covered in the seminars will depend on the talents of the trip participants. We do have requests for sessions on science, reading, and writing, mathematics, special education, and administration.
Besides the 4 days of teacher training each trip and traveling to those locations, we will take time to visit a marketplace, a school (even though they are out of session for the summer), visit an orphanage, do a little sightseeing, enjoy some of the culture, enjoy Dominican food, take in a worship service and enjoy some spontaneous things. The last day and a half of the trip we will spend at Hamaca Be Live Resort in Boca Chica to enjoy the beach, great food, shopping and some entertainment.
From past experience, we have found it works best if all of the teachers come from a general location that would allow us to meet several times for planning before the trip. If you are a teacher from another area, it is possible to join the group providing you can join us for meetings over the internet. If there is a group of at least 12 teachers from your area that would like to form your own group, we can set up a separate trip and the seminar locations for your team. Teachers from our last trips are willing to share their information with you to help you prepare for your trip.

The trip cost is based on the number of participants. We need to have at least 12 teachers to adequately do each week of these seminars. The trip fee covers all transportation, food, and lodging, including all tips from the time you arrive in the Dominican Republic until the time you leave the country. Our actual trip costs while in the Dominican Republic are fixed and will not change. We will not know the exact cost until we can lock in airline tickets. Prices may vary from other parts of the country. We would still ask that you join us at our last stopover before we leave the US. You can join us for either or both weeks. Meals and other expenses while traveling to and from the Dominican Republic are not included in the trip fee. *The Indianapolis trip fee does include Park and Stay at a hotel near the airport the night before departure. The Miami location does not include a park and /or stay package. Not included is the $10 US (cash) you will need for Visitor’s Card you will need to purchase when you arrive in the DR.
You can order your own airline tickets. We ask that you either meet up with us somewhere along the way and join us for the last leg of our flight to the Dominican Republic or you fly into the Las Americas airport in Santo Domingo (SDQ) within the hour of the main group.
Important Dates for this trip
April 15, 2018 – Registration and deposit due. The trip deposit of $200 (non-refundable) is due along with your complete name as on your passport and your birth date.
May 15, 2018 – Balance of the cost of your airline ticket is due (cost TBA).
June 10, 2018 – Balance of the trip fee is due.
Since we are ordering tickets as a group, these deadlines are very important. We will have a very good idea of the cost of tickets by April 15th. Additional costs for ordering individual tickets after April 15th will be the responsibility of the person we are getting the tickets for.

Teacher attending these seminars come from both Christian and public schools.
Past experience tells us that these trips can be used for continuous education credits. HHU will provide documentation of your participation and hours spent on preparations and training sessions. HHU will also provide you with a tax-deductible receipt you can use for your taxes.
We encourage bringing your spouse along on the trip. We will try to find ways to get them involved in the training sessions and behind the scenes work that goes on.
We also encourage college students interested in the teaching profession to join our group. You can be a part of the team doing presentations and learning from seasoned teachers
One More Thing
Many of your relatives, friends, and colleagues are interested in helping you with the cost of your trip. They just need a way to do that. Helping Hands Unlimited can help. We have some suggestions on ways to raise funds. The simplest is to write letters to people you know, telling them about your desire to help train Dominican teachers. If handled right, their contributions can be tax-deductible. Helping Hands Unlimited has something else that can help. We will create an online giving page for you on our website. You can send your donors there to give online to your trip (using credit cards or electronic funds transfers). They can still mail checks to Helping Hands Unlimited. We use the same system to receive checks. You will also be given a link to your own management page. You can go there to see the progress you are making as well as details of who has given funds for your trip. You can then send thank you notes for their contributions.
Just Thought of Something Else
We are interested in coming to your school or church to talk to a group about these trips or setting up a special trip for your own group. Please contact us to make arrangements for us to visit.
Both teams would also like to take school and teaching supplies. Even if you cannot go, you could collect items for us to take with us. Chalk, erasers, scissors, glue, paper, pencils, markers, pens, posters, etc.
