The Light Christian Radio and Cable TV Channel
Higuey, Dominican Republic
The ministry of the Voice of the Light radio station in the Dominican Republic is tremendous. In addition to good Christian music, they provide news and commentary based on Christian values, Bible studies, and prayer times over the air. When we were introduced to the station in 2005, they were about to go off the air due to a lack of funds and out-of-date equipment. Because this was a station that was doing things right, had a powerful ministry to its listeners, and had a strong vision for the future, Helping Hands Unlimited decided to help. Through partnerships with radio ministries in North America, we're able to raise funds and provide gently used equipment to help them upgrade their station. Today, the Voice of the Light reaches almost twice the listening area it once did. They have also begun a Christian cable TV station that shares the good news of Christ throughout the eastern part of the Dominican Republic.
This is the remarkable story of how God orchestrated our involvement with the Voice of the Light.
Later that evening, Junior shared with us some of the problems the station faced with the government. They were on a non-commercial frequency but they had been exempted from that rule and allowed to sell commercials. Those commercials paid the electric bill and allowed them to stay on the air. The government now said they were revoking the exemption and the station had to quit selling commercials. The staff was all volunteer and there were very few places where they could make up the difference in the money they needed to operate. Junior told us that a number of people had been praying for wisdom on how to take the station off the air. The answer they kept getting was “wait”.
The ministry of the radio station was tremendous. Besides Christian music, they did news and commentary based on Christian values, Bible studies, and prayer times over the air. At one point, they were the only radio station on the air in the eastern side of the island when a hurricane struck the island. People had to tune in to their station to hear the latest information on the storm and to receive official government information. The station was doing everything right but now they could go silent. It did not take long for us to decide we wanted to work with the Voice of the Light radio station. Besides that, Junior also had some other dreams…that were creating a Christian cable channel to be broadcast on local cable systems.
We began an effort to get the station new equipment. Through a friend who worked in Christian radio, a station in New Hampshire donated a gently used control board for the studio. 89Q in Wausau. WI donated studio-quality microphones. They also offered to sell us (at an extremely low price) their relatively new transmitter. A church in Indiana provided funds for the construction of the studio console. Spirit FM in Missouri provided funds for a new antennae system. The list goes on.
The station is doing well and Junior did move forward with his vision for a Christian cable TV channel. It is now being broadcast 24 hours a day on several cable systems in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic.
Lives are being touched and changed by both ministries. Even in the middle of the night when people cannot sleep, the Voice of the Light is spreading the Good News of God’s love behind closed doors to people who need Him.
Thank you for your prayers and support for La Voz de la Luz radio and television. With God’s help and your support, we will continue to work with more Christian stations in helping them share the Good News of God’s love for everyone willing to listen.
