The Thomas Project

Kenya

Young farmer in Kenya

Burhan was a very normal boy. His friends called him "chikopo". When he was in a Muslim school, his grades were not good: Math = 2%
English = 5%
Science = 0%
Social sciences = 1%

He was then taken to a government school and got the following results; Maths = 0%,English = 1%, Science = 0%. Social sciences = 0% His parents were very disappointed but finally, they decided to put him in a Christian school. The first term Buruhan passed and was first in the class.  Maths = 90%, English = 93%, Science = 95%, Social sciences = 89%.  His parents could not believe it. They asked him how he managed to pass and he said;  "When I saw a man nailed on the cross, I knew that these teachers don't joke with students here".

It is a great story.  Education is a great way to provide a child with the tools to improve their life and give them hope for a better future. But there are many other obstacles these children face.  Many of their families have been decimated by diseases such as AIDs.  Many of the children have no living parents.

The Thomas Project Vision

Helping Hands Unlimited and the Rachel Project have partnered with Thomas and Joyce Ngumu Nzau, to provide help to orphaned children in remote villages in Kenya through the Thomas Project.  This project provides education, medical and nutritional help.  Once the children reach the eighth grade, their options are to get a job doing hard work, get married, or find a sponsor and attend a boarding school.  Many do not have the resources to continue their education.  Boarding schools.  Boarding schools provide two future options. The first is vocational training that does prepare them to get a good job. It also prepares them to go on to the university to get a degree and give them a better job.

The most important part of their relationship with The Thomas Project is they will experience God's love for them through Thomas and Joyce, and through their education in the schools they attend.  Our goal is to see them grow up as educated Christian young men and women who are capable to becomes leaders in their family, church, and community.

These are the first five children in our TTP sponsorship program.  It costs $42 a month to sponsor them.  That will pay the boarding school fee, room and board, and a few other essentials.  You can sponsor any of them by clicking on the Sponsorship button below the student profiles

Brigit
Brigit

BRIGIT MUENI is the first child who joined the TTP/HHU sponsorship program last year when she joined Secondary school. She is now in Form Two.

She has the ambition to become a doctor. This is a profession that will need her to put a lot of effort into biological sciences lessons. We are encouraging her to do that. We at the project are also keen to walk with the child because many times their ambitions may not be realized and that could lead to disappointment, but we are monitoring the class performance and guidance from the teachers so that we can advise the children accordingly. It is known that we all start our childhood with grand expectations but at some point, they may not be realized. The Saturday club's program is aimed at keeping close and in touch with the children to keep guiding them and providing moral support.

Ann Mulia
Ann

ANN MULIA began Form One (9th grade) in May of 2021. She comes from and disjointed family where the mother is going through depression and is on medicine. The father was a former police officer who has a backbone deformity due to an accident at his former job and cannot support their family of seven. The family depends on well-wishers. A sister of Ann started secondary school and could not continue with her education due to this situation. She ended up being married off. Therefore, we are rescuing Ann. She is incredibly happy to be in school. She will be living with a family friend who lives near the school she is attending. We wish to transfer her to a boarding school at the earliest opportunity.

Mercy
Mercy

MERCY SYOMBUA is a bright child from a single mother who does causal work at construction sites. It was very possible that Mercy would have stayed at home and her life just collapsed at that point. She scored 313 out of a possible 500 marks. This is a grade that could not be ignored, so we decided to enroll her to give her the opportunity to continue her education. God rescued this kid from a disease that enlarged head.  Her mother spent a fortune on hospital bills.  She is now okay. She has started form one (9th grade in May 2022).

Laura
Laura

LAURA SUNDAY's mother is a single parent who is also struggling to bring up all her children. We noticed Laura's case when the mother appeared in a meeting asking for help to send her daughter to secondary school. We try to focus on helping female children who are more vulnerable than male children. In many cases, girls are married off if they do not attend secondary school (high school). When the family background is poor, the only option is to marry them off, especially if they are part of certain tribes in Kenya. Marriage is a source of income since the parents of the husband will bring a dowry. Sometimes it is good in the eyes of the mother because it can turn her fortunes. But here at the TTP sponsorship program, we believe that the child should not be a source of income that enriches their parents. They should be given an opportunity to build their future and potential.

Laura started secondary school in May 2022. She is in form one (9th grade). Like many children beginning Form One classes, she has not decided what she wants to do in life, but we are sure as she goes through her high school education, she will be able to decide her career path as her skills develop.

The Thomas Project Personnel

Thomas and Joyce

We first met Thomas and Joyce through our involvement with The Rachel Project.  Thomas was involved with the Martins during their time while they were serving in Kenya. Over the years, they had lost contact with each other, until Thomas found out they were working with Helping Hands Unlimited.  They renewed their relationship and Thomas began sharing about the needs of orphaned children in remote villages.  That began their relationship with Helping Hands Unlimited.

Since that time, Helping Hands Unlimited has helped Thomas with his seminary training.  We began helping the first young woman we sent to a boarding school.  There are now more children waiting to enter the program.

Several times Helping Hands Unlimited has also provided funds for food distribution in Thika Town, a slum area that has a neglected older population.  Besides receiving several days' worth of food, the events were also used as a way to present the Gospel to those receiving food.
