Kenya

Young farmer in Kenya

Buruhan was a very normal boy. His friends called him "chikopo". When he was in a Muslim school, his grades were not good: Math = 2%
English = 5%
Science = 0%
Social sciences = 1%

Buruhan's journey was one filled with challenges. Initially, he struggled at a government school, achieving disappointing results: Maths = 0%, English = 1%, Science = 0%, Social Sciences = 0%. His parents, heartbroken by his performance, made the courageous choice to enroll him in a Christian school in hopes of a brighter future.

To their amazement, Buruhan flourished in this new environment. In his first term, he excelled, earning remarkable scores: Maths = 90%, English = 93%, Science = 95%, Social Sciences = 89%. His parents were overjoyed, unable to believe the transformation before them. When they asked Buruhan how he found the motivation to succeed, he simply replied, "When I saw a man nailed on the cross, I knew that these teachers don’t joke with their students here."

This statement reflects an awakening in him, a realization of the profound dedication and love that his teachers poured into their work, much like the love Christ showed for humanity. Education became not just a means of learning but a light guiding him to a better path.

Yet, this story serves as a reminder of the many challenges faced by children in similar circumstances. Many come from families devastated by illness, such as AIDS, leaving them without parental support and struggling for hope. It is our compassion and love, inspired by our faith, that can help uplift these children and provide them with the tools they need to overcome obstacles and build a hopeful future. Together, we can be instruments of change, offering support and education to those who need it most, reflecting the heart of Christ in our actions.

The Thomas Project Vision

Helping Hands Unlimited and the Rachel Project have partnered with Thomas and Joyce Ngumu Nzau, to provide help to orphaned children in remote villages in Kenya through the Thomas Project.  This project provides education, medical and nutritional help.  Once the children reach the eighth grade, their options are to get a job doing hard work, get married, or find a sponsor and attend a boarding school.  Many do not have the resources to continue their education.

Boarding schools provide two future options. The first is vocational training, which prepares them to get a good job. It also prepares them to go on to the university to get a degree and give them a better job.

The most important part of their relationship with The Thomas Project is they will experience God's love for them through Thomas and Joyce, and through their education in the schools they attend.  Our goal is to see them grow up as educated Christian young men and women who are capable to becomes leaders in their family, church, and community.

Sponsoring a child through the Thomas Project costs $42.00 USD. We currently have ten children ready and waiting for sponsors and more children on a waiting list who also need support. As soon as one child in the program is sponsored, we add a new child to the list.

Sponsoring a child is easy! Simply click on the sponsorship button, fill out the registration form, and you’ll be on your way. Once we receive your information, we will assign a child to you and send you general information about your sponsored child. Additionally, we will periodically update you on your child's progress.

If you prefer not to sponsor a child online, please call us at 765-730-3618, and we will assist you over the phone.

The Thomas Project Personnel

Thomas and Joyce

We first met Thomas and Joyce through our involvement with The Rachel Project.  Thomas was involved with the Martins during their time while they were serving in Kenya. Over the years, they had lost contact with each other, until Thomas found out they were working with Helping Hands Unlimited.  They renewed their relationship and Thomas began sharing about the needs of orphaned children in remote villages.  That began their relationship with Helping Hands Unlimited.

Since that time, Helping Hands Unlimited has helped Thomas with his seminary training.  We began helping the first young woman we sent to a boarding school.  There are now more children waiting to enter the program.

Several times Helping Hands Unlimited has also provided funds for food distribution in Thika Town, a slum area that has a neglected older population.  Besides receiving several days' worth of food, the events were also used as a way to present the Gospel to those receiving food.
